Floods can be a severe problem for homeowners, especially that it wreaks havoc anywhere it occurs. It is heartbreaking to see your valuables destroyed and covered in mud once the water receded. However, you must still be vigilant so that you can save essential possessions for you and your family.

To help you, here are some ways to save your things after the flood.
  1. Prioritize the Most Important Things
After the flood, you can expect that you can't salvage everything you have. That is why you must check and get the most important things first. It can be things with monetary or sentimental value.

    Here are some examples:
       - Pictures and photo albums
       - Passed down paintings and books
       - Antiques/heirloom
       - Important files and documents

  2. Allow Air Drying
Since your things are wet from the flood, it is advisable to air dry them indoors. You can open a window or use air conditioners to dry them up. This method can preserve your things as much as you can. Don't ever use irons or ovens because this may only damage your valuables even more.

  3. Treat Things Carefully
Don't forget that some things can be more fragile once they get soaked in water. Examples of these are books, photo albums, paintings, and furniture. If not handled carefully, these things can get destroyed. So it is crucial to be meticulous when you are working on these things.

Also, don't forget to take out the pictures from the album. Additionally, make sure to remove the cover of paintings and other stuff with frames. You can put paper towels in your books to dry them. Keep the paper towels in between every page to absorb more water.

  4. Freeze Your Things
If the weather is still bad or if your things haven't dried up within two days, better freeze them. It will ensure that your books, documents, or pictures will not get ruined while you are busy with other matters. Also, it will keep molds from thriving and prevent dye or color of other objects from transferring to other items. Finally, it will give you enough time to do other things until you can adequately go back and clean them again.

It is also essential to be prepared and secure your home and belongings even before the flood comes. You can do this by investing in insurance from a reliable company.
